Yves Saint Laurent – Revolutionizing the World of Fragrance
Yves Saint Laurent was born in Oran, Algeria in 1936 and at the young age of 17, his fashion drawings were published in the Vogue magazine. He went to fashion school and after a short stint, he started working for Christian Dior. Regarded as one of the foremost fashion designers of 20th century, Yves Saint Laurent founded the fashion label in 1961. Through the years, the fashion label has remained relevant in the industry by adapting to the changes in the fashion world.
The underlying thesis of the fashion label is to exude a sense of style while being comfortable. The Yves Saint Laurent label was one of the first to introduce tuxedo suit for women and the use of non-white models for apparel. The first fragrance from the house of Yves Saint Laurent was released in 1964. The fragrance was called Y, and it was created in collaboration with the perfumer Jean Amic. The scent was a sensual expression of femininity and it was known for its uniquely shaped bottle.
The first fragrance for men was launched by this fashion house in 1971 and it was called Pour Homme. This woody and aromatic scent was designed for men and it had base notes of sandalwood, musk, tonka bean, and amber. Another popular perfume called Rive Gauche was also released by YSL in 1971 and the fragrance was a tribute to the modern women that were not afraid to take risks and face life on their own terms. It was one of the first fragrances that were packed in a tin can – a unique packaging decision for the times when all other perfumes were packed in glass bottles.
Through the years, the label has won awards and accolades all over the world for its unique contributions to the world of fashion.
